2000-01 Martin Straka Game Worn Jersey (set 2)
Straka was drafted 19th overall by the Penguins in the 1992 NHL entry draft, and found his way onto the roster in 92-93, tallying a measly16 points in 42 games. He would explode the following season for 64 points, reaching the thirty goal mark for the first time in his career before returning to the Czech league during the 1994-95 lockout. It would take him six long years and three different teams to regain that scoring prowess, bouncing from the Pens to the Senators, then the Islanders, and finally the Panthers before rejoining the Penguins in 1997-98. Over the next four years Straka would come into his own, nearly reaching 100 points in 2000-01 with twenty seven goals and sixty eight assists while wearing this jersey. He is perhaps best remembered for his overtime heroics later that same season, sending the Penguins to the 2nd round of the playoffs after beating Olaf Kolzig on a breakaway in a decisive game six.
This jersey is matched to a card from the 2001 playoffs and is littered with wear, including stick marks, board burns, and a handful of un-repaired holes. It is also video matched to 2-16-01 vs. the Devils, and the following day vs the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Interestingly, I was able to match up the exact moment one of the photos was taken with video from the game. Early in the second period, Straka winds it up on the power play, carrying the puck from behind the net, pushing it out past the goal line, and skating with his right knee leading as he turns. It didn’t hurt that the image included the date, which made it profoundly easier to match up, but still, a cool moment.
