1992-93 Larry Murphy Game Worn Jersey (set 1)

On December 11th 1990, the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Murphy and Peter Taglianetti from Minnesota for Chris Dahlquist and Jim Johnson. The deal proved transformative, as Murphy immediately provided the puck-moving ability and power-play quarterbacking Pittsburgh needed, finishing the 1990–91 season with 24 points in 44 games. His five playoff goals, 18 assists and 23 points established team playoff records for a defenseman, helping Pittsburgh capture its first Stanley Cup.

Murphy remained instrumental in the Penguins’ 1992 championship, recording 77 points in 77 regular-season games and 16 points during the playoffs. He was equally outstanding in 1992–93, establishing career highs with 22 goals and 63 assists for 85 points in 83 games. His plus-45 rating ranked among the league’s best, and he finished third in Norris Trophy voting behind Chris Chelios and Ray Bourque, earning NHL Second All-Star Team honors. Pittsburgh also captured its first Presidents’ Trophy, setting franchise records for wins and points.

Murphy ultimately won four Stanley Cups during his career and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 along side former team mate Paul Coffey, and fellow great Ray Bourque. No player in the 90’s won more cups than Larry Murphy. Among defensemen all time, Murphy ranks 6th, 4th, and 5th in goals, assists, and points. In playoffs points he is 6th in each category. His record for points by a rookie defenseman has yet to be broken.
