Marc-André Fleury 2009-09 (set 1)
The Penguins were set to draft in the third position of the 2003 entry draft, but wanted Fleury so badly they traded with Florida to move up to the number one spot. That move panned out well for the Penguins, as Fleury appeared in the ‘08 finals, won in the ‘09 finals, and then played an integral role in two more championships in ‘16 and ‘17. The Penguins were forced to trade Fleury in the 2017 expansion draft due to the superb play of rookie goaltender Matt Murray, and Fleury went on to lead the Vegas Golden Knights to the finals in 2018. In 2021, Fleury stamped his ticket to the hall of fame, winning the Vezina trophy as the best goaltender in the NHL. He is only the third goalie in NHL history to reach 500 wins, and on January 15th 2024, surpassed Patrick Roy to move into #2 all time.
This jersey was worn for nine games during the first half of the 2008-09 season, during which Fleury went 5-3-1 with a .903 save percentage and a 2.8 GAA, including a 47 save overtime loss to the Devils. Little did Fleury know, later that season he’d be stopping the NHL’s best defenseman from point blank range to win the Stanley Cup.
The jersey shows moderate wear with a large repair above the crest, an un-repaired hole on the left arm, heavy post paint transfer on the back numbers and sleeves, various puck and stick marks, popped threads, and pilling from his equipment on the cuffs and collar. It is matched to several images from the first part of the 2008-09 season.
