In 1989, Kevin Stevens was showing signs that he could be a dominant power forward in the league. The following season he exploded for 46 goals and 48 assists, tying the team lead with Mark Recchi, and setting the all time record for playoff goals by a left winger. He’d earn his first trip to the all star game, and most importantly win his first Stanley cup. In subsequent years he’d have absolutely legendary seasons, scoring 123 and 111 points respectively, before his career was derailed by injury. During his prime, Stevens was an absolute force, bullying his way through the league with the likes of Rick Tocchet, Cam Neely, Mark Messier, and other elite power forwards. Of all of Mario Lemieux’s line mates, he is remembered the most fondly.

On May 15th 1993, during game seven of a playoff series vs the Islanders, a hit with defenseman Rich Pilon knocked Stevens unconscious in mid air, his face to striking the ice unimpeded. Stevens would require facial reconstruction surgery, and the painful recovery would accelerate his recreational drug abuse into full-blown addiction, sending his career, and his life, into a downward spiral. Incredibly, as of 2026, Stevens has been clean for nine years, and does speaking engagements to enlighten younger players. He is part of the Penguins ring of honor for his contributions to the team over ten seasons, and in 2024 was elected to the USA Hockey Hall of Fame.
