On February 16th, 1994, Tomas Sandström was traded to the Penguins along with Marty McSorley for Shawn McEachern and Jim Paek. By 1994, Sandström was an eleven year veteran, reliably putting up anywhere from twenty to forty goals per year with the Rangers and Kings while playing an intense game. He’d post six goals and eleven assists in twenty-seven games, and score nearly a point per game the following year. His third season was even better, racking up 35 goals with the powerhouse that was the 1995-96 team.

In 1996-97 he was traded for promising center Greg Johnson, as the Pens needed to address their center depth pending the loss of Mario Lemieux to retirement, and Sandström was a UFA. It would bode well for Sandström, who’d go onto win the Stanley Cup with the Wings that same season.
