Chris Kunitz is one of the most accomplished top six wingers in NHL history, from his beginnings in relative obscurity to retiring fifteen years later as a four time Stanley Cup champion. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Ducks in 2003, Kunitz was picked up on waivers by the Thrashers after the lockout. Two weeks later, he was reclaimed by the Ducks, and went on to break Paul Kariya’s rookie record of 39 points. Two years later he’d win his first cup, as the Ducks defeated the Senators in five games.
In 2008-09 the Penguins were looking for forward depth, specifically on Sidney Crosby’s wing, and general manager Ray Shero traded promising defenseman Ryan Whitney to the Ducks for Chris Kunitz and prospect Eric Tangradi. Kunitz stepped into his role immediately, averaging nearly a point per game, and famously made an excellent break out pass to Max Talbot in game seven of the 2009 Stanley Cup finals, for what would be the game deciding goal.
Over the next handful of seasons, Kunitz bloomed on Crosby’s wing, becoming a reliable 50-point player, ultimately reaching a career high 68 points in 2013-14, at age 34. As his point totals began to decline, his knack for doing the little things right constantly impressed his teammates, allowing him to keep his top six minutes. In 2015-16 and 2016-17 he’d add two more championships to his resume, including a series clinching OT goal in the 2017 conference finals.
This jersey was worn during the first half of 2015-16 season, and is littered with wear. Four large repairs adorn the sleeves, and a board burn that ripped the fabric sits on the back hem. The A shows signs of being removed and added again. The jersey is matched to several photos from the 2015-16 season, and if you hold it up to your ear and close your eyes, you can hear the PA announcer saying “CHRIS - KUUUUUUUUUUUUNITZZZZZZ!!!”
