2015-16 Matt Murray Game worn jersey (Set 2)
Matt Murray was drafted by the Pens in the third round of the 2012 NHL entry draft, and two years later, playing professionally for the WBS Penguins, he set the AHL shutout record at 304 minutes. He’d finish the season as a first team all star, goalie of the year, and rookie of year, foreshadowing what was to come.
Late in the 2015-16 season, the Penguins were on a hot streak, climbing to second in their division after floundering earlier in the season. That luck seemed to run out when starting goalie Marc-Andre Fleury sustained a concussion, thrusting then unknown rookie Matt Murray into the spotlight. Murray performed brilliantly, going 7-2 with two shutouts, propelling the Penguins into the playoffs with their momentum intact. The Pens had captured lighting in a bottle, and rode it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals, where they beat the San Jose Sharks in six games to win their third Stanley Cup in franchise history, with Murray the talk of the NHL. The following season, Murray was again magical, helping the Pens capture a second straight championship. It was the first time since 1998 that any team had won back to back cups, and Murray became the first rookie goalie to win back to back cups.
This jersey was worn during Murray’s emergency call up, as he went 4-2 with two shutouts and held a .943 save percentage. The jersey shows obvious wear with lots of stick and puck marks, and is photo matched to every game in which he played.
